Vegas trip, July 31 - Aug 1, 2004

A weekend trip to Vegas, flown in the Bonanza over the Sierras near Yosemite and Mammoth, then down the eastern side of the Sierras.

Heading East

Yosemite Valley. It was a hazy day, unfortunately. We're about 30-40 miles west of the valley.

Zoom in shot of Yosemite Valley.

Highlighting Half Dome. It's fairly vertical on the back side as well as the front.

Closer in side view of Half Dome

Wawona in the foreground

The Sierras south of Yosemite. Quite rugged.

Continuing down the western side of the Sierras before crossing over

The low point in the mountain range where we plan to cross over is in the right side of this pic.

Now we've crossed over. This is the bustling metropolis of Bishop, CA.

Close in shot of Bishop

A cool layered range east of Bishop.

The same ridge. Nevada is big, empty, hot, and dry.

Descending into Vegas, a little more than two hours after leaving home

North Las Vegas (VGT) airport. It's much easier to go there than McCarren for small aircraft.

Some weirdo hiding in the curtains in our room :)

On the way back, we took some pictures going through the same low point in the Sierras. This is looking South.

My favorite picture of the trip, same location.

I noticed this valley on the way back, approximately due west of Mammoth Ski resort. It looks as deep as Yosemite valley (about 50 miles to the Northwest). Perhaps it's Kings Canyon Natl'l park, but I think that is further south. I haven't been there so I don't know what the terrain looks like.
